In most classes, students are rewarded for their daily participation. Many students feel as if their daily participation does not reflect their mastery of the material; some students are reluctant to speak up, due to shyness or uncertainty. A silent discussion gives all students time to reflect before they comment, gives all students an entrance into the course material, provides a means by which the discussion is preserved and may be shared, and most importantly, a silent discussion resolves with a writing takeaway, formed by the collaborative input of several students. In this silent discussion demonstration, Greenhill School English instructor Joel Garza will show you how to prepare, manage, and curate the students' engagement with a text and with each other.
