The Buck Institute for Education has create a list of essential elements that should be included in a project based learning unit. We will show you what these elements look like in a PBL. We might expand on student voice and choice while we look at a Spanish PBL written for 6 year olds. You will have the chance to use your iPad to read QR codes that provide sustained inquiry for the PBL, “Are Spiders Good or Bad?” What could be more authentic than creating a study guide on the birds in your neighborhood? It’s easy to weave reflection throughout a PBL for young children. We’ll take the time to give you specific ways to do that. By the time we’ve reviewed all the essential elements, you will be able to see how the 21st century skills, such as critical thinking and communication, easily become intertwined in the PBL.
When working with young children, centers become an integral part of the day. We have a trunk full of centers that promote cross-curricular studies while tying in to the PBL unit. We’ll give you plenty of time to look through the centers and take a few pictures of the center activities. Along with your photos, you will leave the session with the planning guides (on the BIE forms) for two PBLs for young children. Our hope is that you will take these ideas and the knowledge of the essential elements of PBL back to your school and into your classroom.
