Students will love using their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to find the diamonds stolen in “The Great Diamond Heist!” The lesson begins with a brief video presentation of their challenge. It will include the history of the “Big Hole Diamond Mine” in Kimberley, South Africa and an imaginative story about the diamond heist. Students must complete ten different mathematical problems on area and perimeter. With each  solved, they will give their answer to a Special Agent. If the answers are correct, the Special Agent will reveal one clue to where the missing diamonds are located. Students will gather the ten geographical clues, that with collaboration, map skills and an atlas, will lead them to the missing diamonds. While this lesson takes two 45 minute class periods to complete, the main ideas of the lesson will be presented within the 45 minutes provided in this session. The students will enjoy this time of peer collaboration  and the curiosity invoked with solving a mystery.
